Venetian Masks
Where:
Venetia, Italy
Show on map
What:
Typical Venetian carnival masks
Description:
Years ago these masks, made of 'paper-mâché', could be found on daily basis in the streets of Venice. Particularly meant to be anonymous these masks were also used during the yearly feasts. The masks disappeared more and more from the streets when Napoleon ought to have forbidden the use of it. But each year [since 1268] during the carnival of Venice, from the 2nd of February until the day before Ash Wednesday, the Venetian people put on their most beautiful masks to change the streets in a colourful scene.
